He watched the smoke waft from the tip of his cigarette and dissipate in the misty morning air. His glass of firewhiskey sat untouched on the table next to him. He’d grabbed it in his fury to get some fresh air, but in retrospect, it might have been a tad too dramatic, even for him, especially before breakfast. “I’m sorry, Theo.” Harry’s voice came from the sliding door to their balcony.

Gothic Fantasy Fest is a Harry Potter fanworks fest dedicated to and centered around our love for the gothic horror genre!

This fest is hosted by The Writing Heirs of Slytherin Discord Server.

Fest Information

The inspiration to host this fest came out of our desire to see more fanworks in the fandom where the darkness within us all is celebrated, embraced, and reveled in.

The premise for this fest is simple: Create any fanwork (fic or fanart) you like, ensuring that your main protagonist of your work is a Slytherin!

But, and this is where the challenge comes in... your fanwork must incorporate one of the gothic horror prompts that we have provided and must be in the gothic horror genre!

We hope, through participating in this fest, that you’ll allow yourself to indulge in what haunts you most!

Fest Rules

All levels of writers and artists are welcome! Even if this is your first fest!

All pairings and ship types (platonic, couples, and polyships) are allowed in this fest. You may also choose to focus your fanwork on only one character.

Ensure that your main character of your fanwork is a Slytherin (no exceptions)!

Any Slytherin from any of the Wizarding World eras is welcome. You may also choose to headcanon a non-Slytherin character as a Slytherin.

Your fanwork must incorporate one of the 99 gothic horror prompts that we provide. There are 12 additional Author/Artist’s choice prompts, however, those are first come, first serve. So, they will go quick!

Ensure that your fanwork qualifies as gothic horror. Read our full rules at the link listed below for further clarification on this.

The darker your fic the better, as this fest is the perfect opportunity to create some dark, morally gray, and/or dead-dove works!

Authors: there is no maximum word count for your work. But there is a minimum word count of 1,000 words.

Artists: As long as you follow the guidelines above, you may submit any form of fanart you like, including moodboards! However, AI-generated work and commissioned work from other artists may NOT be submitted!

This fest is an Author/Artist Revealed event. Your fanwork will be revealed on the dates listed above. When the fest is over, we will highlight your fanwork across our social media from Oct. 24th - Oct. 30th.

You do not have to be a member of The Writing Heirs of Slytherin Discord to participate in this fest. However, we do recommend joining so that you can be in contact with other Gothic Fantasy Fest participants! It’s also the quickest way to get a hold of the admin team!

A Few Reminders

For this fest, there is a one claim per prompt policy.

The only exception to this is our Author/Artist’s choice prompt, which we are allowing up to 12 people to claim. However, once those 12 slots are gone, they’re gone.

You must claim your prompt on AO3 first, then, sign-up. Why? The form will ask you for the prompt # of the prompt you claimed.

You may only claim one prompt at this time. Later on, after sign-ups close, and if there are any prompts left, if you happen to submit your fanwork for your first claim before the fest deadline, you may then claim a second prompt. But remember, the Oct. 17th fest deadline will still apply. 🪄

“Uh so- I was curious what you were planning on doing for the Hogsmeade weekend? I know it’s uh- tomorrow and all, and you probably already have plans, but if you don’t… I was wondering if you wanted to walk around, maybe?” Theo asked, rather nervously. 

The joy Harry felt at Theo’s question was immediately dashed when he remembered he couldn’t go . He spent a few seconds mentally cursing his aunt and uncle before replying. “I’m so sorry, Theo, I can’t go. I don’t have a permission slip…” 

Theo frowned. “Oh. That’s uh- That's okay! Do… Do you want me to stay with you? Blaise has a date and the rest of the Slytherins all have their own thing going on.” 

Harry’s eyes widen at that, and he immediately starts shaking his head in denial. “Oh- No, no- I don’t want you to miss out! I’ll be fine on my own, I’ll just hang out with Hedwig and Conis. I think I can finally manage to get Conis to stop being scared of Hermione’s cat.” He gives a weak chuckle as he looked to the side, avoiding Theo’s eyes.

Theo pursed his lips. “I’m staying. It’s not like I haven’t seen Hogsmeade before.” He shrugged, “I’ve been a few times with my father. I’ll meet you after breakfast and we can go for a walk or something, okay?” 

Without leaving Harry the time to reply, he strode off, leaving Harry flushed but strangely pleased.

Can I bind/print one of your fics?

Yes! Binding is permitted on an individual basis. My works should never be printed on a for-profit site and always be hand-bound. Commissions are also permitted, as long as the only change of money is strictly for materials and shipping. If I see commissions of my works selling for more than I think is a reasonable price for supplies, I reserve the right to ask for an itemized list of your materials. Typesets must be self-made or publicly available and free. I would love to see any bindings you make!

Can I translate one of your fics?

Yes! I must be credited as the original author, and there must be a link to the original ao3 posting as well. Please reach out to me prior to translating. I also ask that a link be provided to me so that I may include it in my original posting, too.

Can I make art/an edit inspired by one of your fics?

The Room of Requirement had been acting up ever since the fiendfyre damage was repaired. No matter how hard Harry concentrated on his requests, the Room always managed to slip in some mischievous twist to its intended purpose.

So it was with some trepidation that Harry entered the Room on the last night of term. Hermione had insisted they throw a Christmas party, something about "inter-house unity" and a "return to normalcy". Harry thought that was a load of bollocks—as if they could pretend things were even remotely normal just seven months after the worst day of their lives—but it was as good an excuse as any to test out the undetectable extension charm on his new flask.

As he stepped into the darkened room, the tinkle of Christmas music and chatter of a couple dozen students washed over him. He wandered the room aimlessly, scanning the crowd for Ron and Hermione. As he tipped his head back for a mid-stride swig of his flask, he nearly collided with someone who had stopped directly in front of him.

It was Theodore Nott, his Slytherin potions partner and general pain in his arse. The swot was always chatting to him about potions ingredients and alchemical theory. Nott never wanted to talk about something interesting like quidditch, even though Harry knew he attended every match. Nott didn't seem to pay much attention to the game, his nose buried in a book or watching Harry and the other seeker scout for the snitch. He obviously didn't care about the score.

Harry wiped the back of his hand across his mouth and gave Nott a perfunctory nod. He was just standing there, his pale blue eyes riveted to a point over Harry's shoulder.

"Oh, shit", Nott breathed.

Harry spun around, whipping his wand out reflexively. "What is it?", he asked, as he scanned the crowd and nearby alcoves. He didn't see anything amiss. He was about to turn back toward Nott to demand what he was on about when a cluster of foliage with small glowing berries caught his eye.

He felt inexplicably transfixed by the small bunch of mistletoe. It could have been mistaken for normal mistletoe were it not for the luminescent berries and golden aura of magic that seemed to pulse around it. Harry was also suddenly, intensely aware of Nott's presence behind him. He was close enough that he could almost imagine he felt Nott's body heat emanating through his tailored oxford.

"What—" Harry began, unable to tear his gaze from the magical plant.

Nott made a strangled sort of noise, and Harry felt the hair on the back of his neck prickle as Nott's exhalation ghosted over his skin. "That's—" Nott's voice was barely a whisper— "that's meschever mistletoe. It's—" Nott let out a low groan that Harry swore he could feel in his chest, lower. "It's the active ingredient in—fuck."

Harry tried to look back at Nott to respond, but instead felt his feet move of their own accord, edging him closer to the mesmerizing plant. He felt, more than heard, Nott's footsteps as he followed close behind. His stomach swooped with awareness of the Nott's proximity. He felt lightheaded.

Harry managed to unscramble his thoughts for long enough to remember that Nott had mentioned this very plant a couple of weeks ago during potions class. And the single, key detail that he remembered hit him like a freight train.

"You mean," Harry choked out, "the one that draws you in... but only with the person you—"

He was underneath the hanging bunch now, and he slowly turned, his eyes running over Nott's chest as he raised his eyes to meet his gaze.

"Yeah," Nott murmured. Harry felt as if he were falling, like gravity had reoriented toward Nott's crystal blue gaze.

Harry's breath hitched as he felt cool, long fingers slide up his jaw. "That means we're—"

Nott's hand tightened on his face. "Kiss me, Potter."

In the Best of Ways

In preparation for the upcoming Chapter Eleven "Remember Me?" from my fic "Pansy Parkinson's Parlous for Sexually Uninhibited Witches and Wizards" (coming out on the 12th) I did this ink image in honour of Harry Potter and Theodore Nott's reconciliation.

And just because I can here is the variation with the line work. I ended up preferring the non line work version but it's still kind of cool.
